Dowdell has no doubt about her college choice

When Mariah Dowdell went on a recruiting trip several weeks ago to Des Moines Area Community College she knew almost instantly it was the place for her.

The head coach there had a uniform with her name on it and made the Southeast High standout point guard feel right at home.

“I was happy with the coach and I liked everything about the program. I hope to play there for two years and move on to a four year school,” Dowdell said after she returned home. “I will have to get used to the cold weather. There were some other schools I was considering, but I really liked the coach here and the fact that they had a winning program.”

Dowdell, who was instrumental in the Seminoles run to the region final last season despite having three freshmen among their top six players, hopes to play point guard and run the offense.

Dowdell averaged close to 10 points per game last year and could shoot with consistency from beyond the arc. But she preferred more to be a facilitator and enjoyed getting assists rather than scoring.

DMACC finished with a 22-11 record last year. Dowdell had offers from several other schools, but Bears head coach Steve Krafcisin, who has been in his position for seven seasons and has a 157-65 record, was a huge selling point for her.

“Mariah is a leader and a heck of a basketball talent. She brings toughness, passion and determination to the basketball court and to every aspect of her life,” Krafcisin said.
